When preparing for personal defense, you should give some thought to the use of available cover. You need to orient your mind to think about the tactical side of the problem. When you find yourself in a potentially dangerous situation, your mind should be programmed to assess the problem and make a few quick decisions about the best course of action. One of the possibilities should be to take advantage of any available cover.
You don’t want to make finding cover the focal point of your thoughts, but you should always make it a part of your awareness. Most situations will call for an immediate and straightforward response to any threat. Why? Because anyone with criminal intent on their mind (i.e. robbery, murder or simple assault) will try to get close to you before initiating their attack. They will try to catch you by surprise and overwhelm you before you can make any response.
