Ready for five days of hard-core work with your .30 caliber combat weapon? Then get on the Gunsite Battle Rifle. This thinking-man’s course teaches students to use the 7.62x51mm NATO (.308) semi-automatic rifle. Author Bob Shimizu recommends you get into physical condition for the class as “battle rifles are accurate at long distance, hit hard, and are heavy, demanding physical stamina from the operator.” The course is taught by rangemaster Walt Wilkinson, who is a retired sergeant major of U.S. Army special operations. Students can expect some serious range days, night shoots and simulators. Shimizu notes, “On the morning of day four, we shot the military-crest outdoor simulator. This exercise uses the VLEI simulator but from the crest of the ridge. There are 13 marked stations that mandate various shooting positions.” Did the author survive this grueling test of mettle?
