Rifle RX – Installing A Recoil PAD

Installing a recoil pad is an easy project for hobby gunsmithing and it adds something of value to the firearm. Rifle or shotgun, the installation process is the same. Measure the butt of your gun and order a recoil pad that is slightly wider and slightly longer. The recoil pad must be larger than the gunstock at all points around the perimeter, and have enough extra to carry the angled lines of the toe and heel out to the edge of the recoil pad.

However, do not get a recoil pad that is too big, as some contain an internal metal frame—if you sand enough of the recoil pad away, the frame will show. Unfortunately, this is something I learned the hard way! Keep Reading
