“If I showed you the ballistics report I got here you would be amazed at how bad that vehicle’s degraded … in that 32 years,” Jay Murphy said. “It’s safe to say we carry weapons — and you can buy ammunition at Walmart — and it will penetrate the skin of that truck today.”
On Monday, council members approved the purchase of a new model, a LENCO Bearcat, for an estimated cost of $225,000 to $250,000. The vehicle’s specifications are closely guarded because of homeland security issues, but it is built on a Ford F-550 chassis, Murphy said.
It will be paid for by federal funds obtained through assets seized from criminals, he said, including one Cape resident with an ill-gotten fortune stashed in a wall of his home.
