During the opening, the New York Says Thank You Foundation presented the National 9/11 Flag — nearly destroyed in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and stitched back together with help of Americans from all 50 states — in a ceremony at Memorial Plaza. The flag was unfurled by firefighters and police, as well as members of the foundation itself, before being transferred into the museum’s permanent collection.

“Throughout the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s dedication period, which formally ended yesterday, we have welcomed tens of thousands of 9/11 family members, 9/11 rescue and recovery workers, active duty first responders, 9/11 survivors, and members of the lower Manhattan community to preview the Museum. And today, we open our doors to the world.
This historic day will begin with a ceremonial presentation of The National 9/11 Flag by the New York Says Thank You Foundation. Nearly destroyed in the aftermath of the attacks on 9/11, this flag has been stitched back together with the same spirit of unity and hope that has rebuilt the World Trade Center. The flag has traveled across the country, to all 50 states, on a tour where thousands of people each offered a stitch in solidarity. In honor of our public opening, The National 9/11 Flag will return to the World Trade Center and enter into the Museum’s permanent collection as living testament to the resilience of the American people.
