Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), Chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on Seapower, has penned a letter to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel urging him to extend production of the Boeing Super Hornet.
Forbes warns that halting manufacture of the Boeing F/A-18 will limit the production capacity of fighter jets in the United States, as well as increase costs by reducing competition.
“Without a change to its budget plans, the Department will be left with a sole-source tactical aircraft program for the Navy. Moreover, the loss of industrial capacity provided by the F/A-18 manufacturing line will eliminate vital competition that could result in spiraling costs, leading to more expensive, less capable systems,” Forbes wrote.
The F/A-18 will be replaced by the Navy F-35C in 2019.
