Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, King Abdullah II and other leaders are scheduled to meet over the next few days. One major topic of discussion is expected to be the civil uprising in Syria, which has caused an estimated half-million plus refugees to flee to the south of Jordan.
Dempsey termed the situation in Syria “a human tragedy.” The United Nations estimates more than 100,000 Syrians have died since the civil war began in March 2011. U.N. officials said more than 1.5 million Syrians have fled the country and millions more are internally displaced.
