With Labor Day weekend in full swing, Georgia law enforcement has stepped up its patrol for the 23rd annual Hands Across the Border.
The event comes on a weekend featuring he Georgia-Clemson football game, another game in Columbia, S.C. and a NASCAR race.
According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety:
During the annual Hands Across the Border campaign, Georgia law enforcement meets their counterparts in communities near the Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida state lines to conduct road checks. In the past, the campaign has had a history of catching not only drunk drivers, but drug offenders, fugitives, drivers with outstanding warrants, unlicensed and uninsured drivers and those transporting improperly restrained child passengers.
“The fatalities are lower than they were this time last year,” Georgia State Patrol Troop Capt. Allen Marlowe told WJBF 6 in Georgia.
“Up to 204 fatalities up to Labor Day and 170 right now,” South Carolina Highway Patrol Lt. Nick King told News Channel 6. “We want to try to keep it down as much as possible. Football season is in. Tailgating and those types of issues are going on so we just want to try and keep everybody safe.”
