Police Chief Jason Dombkowski of the West Lafayette Police Department said the vehicle, which has armored plating and would serve as a “moving shield” for his officers, is on permanent loan from the military.
The armored carrier would be used by local SWAT team in standoffs and other potentially lethal situations.
“What that thing is, it’s a moving shield for our officers to make an approach. It is a large shield for our officers to move behind,” Dombkowski said. “When I call on my officers to go into harm’s way, I owe it to them and to their families to provide them with available equipment to protect themselves and rescue citizens.”
The truck is valued at $600,000 and was built in 2008. It hasn’t seen combat, but it has roughly 11,000 miles on it. It is currently being refitted for use by local law enforcement.
