A recent Iowa legislative session approved roughly 30 more officers for each department. However, find the right recruits isn’t that easy.
Sgt. Scott Bright of the Iowa State Patrol told KCCI8 that “one of the biggest stumbling blocks for potential recruit is the physical fitness test, a problem felt by the Des Moines Police Department as well.”
Sgt. Jason Halifax said it is not uncommon to lose half a class of recruits to the physical fitness test, or losing applicants just by them simply not showing up on test day.
Along with the preliminary physical test, recruits must also complete a written test, a background check, a physical from a doctor and a psychological test.
