Three Iowa police officers in Jasper County were honored for saving the life of a semitrailer driver who crashed into a creek off Interstate Highway 80.
Officer Joe Bartello of the Baxter Police Department, Deputy Jeremy Burdess of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Officer Adam Herman, formerly of the Newton Police Department, have been honored with the Sullivan Brothers Award of Valor, in a ceremony led by Iowa Department of Public Safety Commissioner Larry Noble and attended by Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.
On May 30, 2013, dispatchers received a call about a crash on I-80 just east of the Baxter exit. Burdess, Herman and Bartello responded and discovered the driver, 70-year-old Dwayne Michael, injured but conscious inside the semitrailer which was mostly submerged in the creek. He was using a small air pocket at the top of the cab of the semitrailer to stay alive.
Bartello helped Michael get to the surface in order to receive treatment for his injuries.
