Social media is the new battleground in crime fighting. According to a blog post written last June by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), extremists will often use social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter to “connect, communicate, and engage,” but police are learning to use technology to their advantage.
At a seminar the IACP presented in November, panelists stressed the “importance of using community policing and engaging community members and leaders both online and offline to address online radicalization to violence,” the blog said.
Law enforcement officials said people will often use social media as a sounding board to air grievances and make threats. Conversely, police departments, such as Baltimore and Boston, have effectively utilized social media to provide instant updates to developing situations.
