Petty Officer First Class Rob Patterson spent more than seven months in Afghanistan and was set to return home in July, but decided to surprise his son a little early instead, the MLB reported.
Patterson’s 6-year-old son Roger was on the field Sunday as the hometown Mariners were set to take on the Cleveland Indians. Roger was on the field to announce “Play ball!” to the crowd when his father, a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, came up from behind him to give him a hug.
Roger’s initial reaction was that of shock before the tears started and the hugs got a little tighter.
Rob Patterson is a 14-year Navy veteran.
