Since 2009, thousands of military medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, medics and more, have completed training rotations at the burn center, as part of a program that enables Luke Air Force Base medical staff to brush up on their skills.
The goal of the training is to ensure that military doctors can provide treatment for major and minor injuries in dangerous conditions when they deploy overseas.
Military doctors shadow the staff at the Arizona Burn Center, and also gain hands-on experience.
“We have to be ready to go. They can call me tomorrow and say, ‘Hey, you’re going to Africa,’ ” said Dr. Christopher Martinez, a primary-care physician for the outpatient clinic at Luke Air Force Base.
