A total of $2.8 million in military-grade weapons and equipment has been given out to departments within Monterey County, according to the Monterey Herald.
The four local departments to benefit from the program — Del Rey Oaks, Salinas, Seaside and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office — cite budget constraints and cost savings as major drivers in their participation.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office benefited most from the program so far, getting $1.4 million in equipment, mostly in microphones and 137 rifles.
“The program itself has been helpful to save taxpayers money by transferring equipment no longer needed by the military. . . . That doesn’t mean we need tanks or anything along those lines,” Scott Miller, Sheriff of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, told the Monterey Herald.
The Del Rey Oaks Police Department also managed to acquire a 25,000-pound, $733,000 MRAP.
