There are currently ten active K-9’s in the Duluth Police Department, Superior Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the St Louis County Sheriff’s Department, and a new K-9 can cost anywhere from $5 to $10,000, not including training veterinary care and gear.
Superior Police Department Deputy Chief Nicholas Alexander says the K-9 program is a key part of the police force. “They’re a non human companion that aid in ways a human can’t,” he said. “I mean, their senses are obviously more particular. They aid in drug detection. So they work on traffic stops and search warrants so they drugs. They can help us locate someone that fled from us so tracking of a person. In many cases they can help apprehend a violent person that can prevent an officer from having to go hands on and being injured.”
