On Jan. 1, 2011, Clark County Deputy Sheriff Suzanne Hopper was ambushed and killed while investigating reports of shots fired at a local campground. The perpetrator, 57-year-old Michael Ferryman, had a history of violence towards LEOs in other counties, and was declared criminally insane in 2002.
The new law, known as the Deputy Suzanne Hopper Act, requires judges to notify law enforcement when they order somebody convicted of a violent crime to be treated for mental illness, or when they order the conditional release of somebody found not guilty by reason of insanity or incompetent to stand trial.
