New York Law Enforcement Launch Annual School Bus Safety Initiative

New York law enforcement is set to launch their annual initiative aimed at protecting children on school buses. According to WBNG, Operation Safe Stop is a time when police crack down on laws against passing school buses, as well as not stopping for school buses.

LEOs will be enforcing the laws by following buses on Thursday in both marked and unmarked cars.

“Bus drivers receive continuous training on safety. Children are reminded everyday about being safe, but the one thing we can’t control are the actions of the other motorists,” said Lisa Wilson, Union-Endicott Supervisor of Transportation.

At a press conference, local LEOs joined transportation officials to talk about the dangers of breaking these laws.

“They’re not paying attention. They don’t see the bus, first of all, and then they don’t see the kids that may be crossing or distracted, running through the road,” said Deputy Robert Stapleton of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

As WBNG reports, drivers caught passing a stopped school bus face a $400 fine and five points on their license.
