Newark Mayor Luis Quintana and Newark Police Director Sam DeMaio staged a press conference to announce they would hire 100 new police officers and add additional vehicles, including 26 new SUVs and 10 unmarked cars, in an effort to combat the city’s rising crime rates.
While assaults and total number of shootings decreased in 2013, murder and robberies increased last year.
The Newark Police Department also said that civilians would be put in charge of communication and finance in an effort to boost police manpower.
50 new officers will enter the academy in March. An additional 50 will enter when the first group of officers graduate.
According to police statistics, Newark topped 100 murders for the first time since 2007.
