Trooper Ryan Kauffmann, an eight-year veteran of the force, responded to the scene of the accident, where he noticed that the driver’s leg was mangled below the knee.
“It was a pretty severe injury and there was a lot of blood flowing,” the trooper said.
Austin McCabe, a construction foreman and former U.S. Marine, helped Kauffmann with applying a tourniquet and gauze on the leg.
“We assessed the situation and training kicked in — we had to stop the blood flow,” Kauffman said.
