North Carolina police are trading in their Tommy Guns for more modern weapons. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office just submitted a proposal to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners last week to exchange two Thompson submachine guns gathering dust in their armory for 88 new Bushmaster rifles. The value of the exchange is estimated at $60,000.
“We’re able to take two firearms that have no current applicable use to the sheriff’s office and exchange those for 88 rifles that will be deployed to officers on the street who don’t have them today, at no cost to the county,” Chief Deputy Brad Stanley said.
The detailed history of the two 1928 Tommy guns is not known, but the weapons are believed to have been a gift to the sheriff’s office from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
