North Korea said it successfully detonated a miniaturised nuclear device at a northeastern test site on Tuesday, defying UN Security Council orders to shut down atomic activity or face more sanctions and international isolation.
A rally took place to celebrate the test in central Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Square.
Countries around the world have criticised North Korea’s most recent nuclear test, but news of this opposition has not been reported by North Korean state media.
Instead, North Korean news broadcasts repeat the government’s official position, saying that Tuesday’s nuclear test was carried out as a result of North Korea’s perception that the United States pursues a hostile policy against the communist state.
