Under a new law which went into effect on Jan. 1, officers now have the option of seizing license plates from the driver’s vehicle. Previously, they were only allowed to impound the vehicle or issue a ticket or warning to the uninsured driver.
LEOs will then issue a citation, which will serve as a temporary license plate for 10 days, during which the driver will pay for temporary insurance. The original license plate will be returned when the driver buys an insurance policy and has paid all fines.
According to insurance commissioner John Doak, one in four Oklahoma drivers are uninsured.
