The Senate recently approved a bill sponsored by Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township, to expand the scope of the Military Family Relief Assistance Program and extend a key revenue source – a state income tax refund checkoff option for Pennsylvania taxpayers.
Created in 2005 as part of a “Support the Troops” initiative, the program is designed for a rapid response to military families facing emergency situations.
Currently, the program provides grants up to $3,500 for service members and their families who experience a sudden financial hardship or loss of income as a result of military service, death or critical illness of a family member or disaster where food or shelter is needed.
