Officials at the Pentagon have confirmed that the United States has offered to send 100 Defense Department civilians and a merchant ship to the Mediterranean on a mission to destroy “hundreds of tons” of chemical weapons precursor materials in Syria.
The Pentagon will mount three Field Deployable Hydrolysis Systems (FDHS) in the hold of the Military Sealift Command ship Cape Ray, in order to destroy the syrian chemical weapons stockpile without having to ship the materials overseas.
The FDHS is capable of breaking down the mustard gas and sarin precursor materials, transferring them into an inert liquid, a senior defense official said.
