Port Huron Citizens' Police Academy Beginning Soon

The Port Huron Police Department has officially begun accepting applications for the 2014 Citizens’ Police Academy. Those who attend will receive an education in criminal law, domestic violence, gangs, drunk driving enforcement, arrest procedures, crimes scene processing, traffic stops and other activities related to police real work.

The program is being coordinated by Port Huron police officer Adrianne Mynsberge, who spoke about the diversity of attendees.

“A lot of them have become volunteers and are very involved here,” she said. “Others are interested in becoming a police officer or are police retirees.”

The Citizens’ Police Academy, which is free, will meet every Wednesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. starting on Feb. 5 at the municipal building at 100 McMorran Blvd. in Port Huron, Michigan.

Port Huron Police Capt. Jeff Baker said the Citizens’ Police Academy is a good way for citizens to get a glimpse of real police work.

“Citizens watch TV and see a home invasion solved in 60 minutes,” said Baker. “We call it the ‘CSI Effect’. They do major crime solving within the hour by some magical means; but in reality, it takes investigating, a lot of legwork, canvassing the neighbors, and a lot of luck.”

Applications can be picked up at the Port Huron Police Department or by visiting porthuronpolice.org. Completed applications are due by Jan. 24.
