Soboroff was hoping to snag a photo with the singer that showed off their LAPD wristbands, hoping that the photo “would boost morale in the department in the wake of a series of officer deaths in the past year,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
However, Rihanna managed to drop Soboroff’s phone in the process, shattering the screen.
The L.A. Police Commission President used the opportunity to auction off the phone on eBay and raise funds for the LAPD Foundation — the money raised would specifically “benefit cadets and families of the fallen officers,” the LA Times reported.
Soboroff told Rihanna about the auction and asked her to sign the phone, which she did with the words “Sorry! I ♥ LAPD. Rihanna.”
But the singer didn’t stop there. Rihanna wanted to make sure the auction was worth it and decided to donate $25,000 to the LAPD Foundation.
Thanks to the quick thinking of Soboroff and the press around Rihanna’s donation, the eBay auction was up to more than $60,000 as of Thursday morning.
