US to Sell Humvees to Mexico for Anti-Drug Operations

Congress has received a request from the Pentagon for the sale of 3,335 Humvees to Mexico in a deal reportedly worth $556 million.

Rather than selling excess stock not currently in use by the U.S. Army or Marines, Defense News reports that the sale will involve new Humvees manufactured by AM General, a company which is currently embroiled in a close race with Lockheed and Oshkosh over the contract for the military’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle program.

The Mexico deal would include the new vehicles along with “personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistical and program support,” a statement cited by Defense News reads.

In acquiring these new Humvees, Mexico is hoping to “modernize its armed forces and expand its existing army architecture to combat drug trafficking organizations. This will contribute to the Mexican military’s goal of updating its capabilities, while further enhancing interoperability between Mexico and the U.S. and among other allies,” the US government statement says.
