One of the top soldiers in Afghanistan yesterday branded critics of Operation Moshtarak “armchair warriors.”

Major General Nick Carter hailed the campaign as a historic success after opposition MPs had slammed the decision to warn the Taliban about the attack.

Britain’s commander in south Afghanistan said: “This policy of shaping the population and telling them what was happening may seem counterintuitive to those armchair warriors back in London.

“But the thing is, surprise in counter-insurgency is not that helpful. We were very careful about tactical security.”

He said yesterday’s Nato helicopter strike in central Helmand was one of the most “impressive ever undertaken.”
