A “bullpup” warrior that’s been updated and enhanced, the U.S.-made Steyr Arms AUG/A3 SA rifle brings battle-proven, 5.56mm Austrian firepower to our shores. Editor At Large Michael O. Humphries reports, “From an engineering standpoint, one of the most striking elements of the AUG/A3’s design is its truly modular nature.” With six primary subassemblies in its construction (barrel, receiver, bolt, stock, trigger mechanism, magazine group), the carbine can be field-stripped in seconds and without the use of tools. In the AUG/A3 SA you get an overall length comparable to that of many SBRs with a full 16-inch barrel, which gives the operator an excellent little carbine that’s a little different from the ubiquitous AR. Many users also will appreciate the classic touch of the AUG/A3 SA’s translucent amber waffle-pattern mags.
