Spending time recently in one of America’s five largest cities, I couldn’t help noticing that some officers there were aware of the dangers of their profession and some weren’t. With five minutes apart, I met one big city patrolman directing traffic, a paid detail, perhaps in uniform, but with his issue GLOCK in an open top off-duty holster exposed on his dress belt with no spare ammo, no radio, no additional equipment but a pair of handcuffs stuffed in his waistband, and of course, no vest.
Yet a minute later, I was chatting with one of his brother officers, who had paid out of his own pocket for a Bianchi Level II security holster for his GLOCK 9mm, and was properly “geared up.” Which one would you bet on surviving, say, a felon’s grab for his gun?
