December 16, 2008: San Anselmo, CA police officers arrived early to perform a mental health evaluation at an assisted-living facility and encountered a 29-year-old mentally ill patient poised to greet police at his residence with a knife.
The patient became extremely aggressive when officers tried to talk to him and required a less-lethal response from police. Electric projectiles shot into the man failed to subdue him. With the knife in hand, the man advanced to attack the officers. During this advance, one of the officers drew his sidearm and fired a single shot, one that proved lethal.
In an ironic twist, paramedics arrived to see these officers attempt live-saving measures on the mentally ill suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital.
