An Indian warship exchanged fire with a large pirate vessel off the Horn of Africa Tuesday evening, an area known for being plagued by pirate hijackings. The pirate ship, now badly damaged and ablaze in Gulf of Aden, was engaged about 326 miles southwest of Oman’s Salalah port and “matched descriptions of the ‘Mother Vessel’ mentioned in various piracy bulletins,” India’s Defense Ministry reported. The battle follows a recent surge in piracy of the Horn of Africa, including the largely publicized hijacking of a Saudi taker.
