It is unimaginable: first they lost their son, killed in Afghanistan.
Now, the family of Marine Sgt. Daniel Angus is learning his funeral preparations were mishandled, and the grief is coming back.
Sgt. Angus was killed on January 24th, 2010. His remains were brought back to MacDill Air Force Base on February 4th.
But now his family has been told, more than a year later, that Sgt. Angus’s body had been mutilated when it was prepared for the casket at the Air Force Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base, in Delaware.
“They learned the awful news that their son’s arm had been cut off by his own government. Sgt Angus’ arm was chopped off and was placed in his pant leg,” said Mark O’Brien, the family’s attorney.
This all came to light when three whistleblowers who worked at the Air Force Mortuary came forward.
They told the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, a federal watchdog group, that the mortuary director Quinton Keel directed them to cut off Angus’s arm.
