Hornady owns a proud track record with launching cartridges. Now Hornady seemingly set the industry afire once more, with the announcement of its latest proprietary cartridge, the 6mm ARC. Right from the jump, more than 20 companies announced rifles to match the new round. And Hornady fully expects additional announcements from even more companies soon.
22 Companies Plan Rifles in Hornady 6mm ARC
The cartridge brings instant street cred after being selected by a specialized unit with the Department of Defense. Moreover, the cartridge reportedly brings greater downrange performance to the AR-15 platform.
“The 6mm ARC began with a simple question: What can we do with today’s technology to maximize the performance of the AR-15 platform?” Hornady Ballistician Jayden Quinlan said. “We subsequently modeled and tested a variety of designs in different calibers until we were able to produce the most flexible cartridge possible within the limits of the AR-15 system.”
The new cartridge delivers less felt recoil than larger short-action-based cartridges. However, it takes full advantage of modern, heavy for caliber 6mm bullets. As such, it delivers excellent accuracy and ballistic performance at extended range, according to Hornady.
“The 6mm ARC does much of what larger cartridges can and everything that smaller cartridges can’t,” Quinlan said.
The 6mm ARC delivers substantially better ballistics than the 5.56 NATO with similar recoil. Additionally, it delivers comparable ballistics to the venerable 308 Winchester with 30 percent less weight on both weapons system and ammunition.
