WASHINGTON – Just one day after the Defense Department approved a troop increase of 22,000, Senate has decided to give approval to an additional 8,000 troops, bringing the total increase to 30,000 troops set to begin Oct. 1, 2009. The troop increase is meant to be temporary, acted on to give relief to those who have served multiple tours in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.  It expires Sept. 30, 2012, under the amendment to the 2010 defense authorization bill crafted by Sen. Joseph Lieberman.
