While many operators prefer the 7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge for its power and capabilities, they are less enthusiastic about the added weight it brings. AR-platform rifles chambered in 7.62mm NATO can weigh a couple pounds more than their 5.56mm NATO brethren. Improved machining has helped and handguards have gotten lighter, but most of the weight is in the barrel. For those looking for precision, however, it is pretty hard to shed weight in this area. One of the best ways to reduce weight while maintaining top-notch accuracy is to use a carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel.

Christensen Arms has been in the carbon-fiber business for years. Its parent company started by making carbon-fiber parts for the aerospace industry, and then it moved into medical devices. While that parent company continues to build carbon-fiber parts for both, Christensen Arms has taken that experience into the world of firearms. Christensen Arms is now known for making high-quality ARs with barrels and handguards crafted from carbon fiber to reduce weight.

I recently got a chance to test the company’s CA-10 DMR rifle, which provided a good indication of how much weight you can save with a Christensen rifle. Weighing in at a mere 7 pounds, the CA-10 DMR is as light as many 5.56mm rifles. Christensen makes the carbon-fiber-wrapped barrel completely in house, allowing the company to maintain the highest quality levels. The carbon fiber handguard features lightening cuts that help dissipate barrel heat, a full-length top rail, a short bottom rail for accessories, and sides drilled and tapped for adding more rails and accessories. The upper and lower receivers are machined from a billet of 7075-T6, with unique angles for added durability and ease of use. The rifle ships from the factory with a 1-MOA accuracy guarantee.

Take a quick look at my video to watch the CA-10 DMR in action, and keep your eyes peeled for a full review in an upcoming issue of SPECIAL WEAPONS FOR MILITARY & POLICE. To subscribe, visit Tactical-life.com/subscribe.
