“The mission was supposed to be simple. We were going to do a quick security patrol out on the perimeter of our AO (area of operation). My partner and I were out after dark, driving around in one of our trucks. Our AO was pretty far out, in the middle of nowhere. We’d only been out a little while when I heard a familiar sound. I stopped the truck and heard what sounded like helicopter rotors.
“I got out and peered out into the darkness. Hovering behind us a couple hundred meters was a Cobra attack helicopter. I reached into the truck and grabbed an IR strobe. I turned it on and held both of my hands out to the side. The pilot hung around for a moment, took a good look at us then headed off to the west. We didn’t hear or see him again that night.”
