A fire has claimed two lives at Fort Lee army base near Petersburg. The fire occurred in a residential area of the base around 3:00 a.m., according to Stephen Baker with the Public Affairs Office.
“Two people were found dead after a fire early this morning in a housing unit on post,” Baker wrote in an email. “The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next of kin notification.”
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
Fort Lee Fire and Emergency crews were able to put out the fire shortly after arriving on scene. The fire did damage a nearby duplex, according to Fort Lee Fire Chief Franklin Tanner.
Fort Lee is “a community, a workplace and a home to hundreds of military families,” according to its website. More than 30,000 people live on base.
