IT WAS THE CALL that every police officer dreads, realizing it can come at any time of the night or day. Columbus, Ohio, Police Officer James Niggemeyer received just such a call on the evening of December 8, 2004. The radio call had come in that someone with a gun was shooting people inside a popular nightclub, the Alrosa Villa.
Fortunately Officer Niggemeyer was on patrol nearby and arrived mere minutes after the attack began. The shooter, one Nathan Gale, had already shot six people. The killer reloaded his pistol and grabbed a wounded hostage as the Columbus patrolman entered the scene.
