Short-barreled, AR-platform rifles chambered for the 7.62mm NATO can be a bit finicky and less than reliable. But Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) has worked extensively to increase the system’s reliability using the gas piston operating system. In the upcoming February 2014 issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, author David Bahde writes, “POF is one of the longest-running piston-driven-AR-style rifle-makers on the market…. POF utilizes a tappet-style piston system where gas operates a piston that strikes a rod to move the bolt carrier group. Similar systems populate much of the piston AR market. With no gas entering the action, unlike a direct-impingement system, the rifle runs cleaner and cooler, making it better suited to higher round counts with less maintenance.”
Bahde takes the company’s P308 to the range to run it through its paces, noting that the P308’s “internals include a 4.5-pound, single-stage trigger with KNS anti-walk pins as well as an ambidextrous bolt release and selector switch. An oversized triggerguard facilitates operators wearing gloves…. The P308 also uses a monolithic free-floated handguard. The Modular Railed Receiver (MRR) forend has a long, continuous top rail that interfaces with the upper receiver and allows for the use of a number of rail configurations.”
So how did the P308 rate during the range evaluation? To learn more, check out the February 2014 issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, available on newsstands and digitally November 26, 2013. To subscribe, go to https://www.tactical-life.com/subscribe.
