In the upcoming March 2014 issue of Rifle Firepower, author Wayne van Zwoll tests the new Steyr Duett, an over/under combination gun that should intrique many American shooters and hunters.
Van Zwoll writes, “The Duett features a shotgun barrel over a centerfire rifle barrel. Its hammerless action has double triggers (gold plated, with a set-trigger option for the rifle barrel). They’re factory-adjusted to break at 3.5 pounds. A tang-mounted cocking switch slides forward smoothly against modest spring resistance. This mechanism, adopted by other makers, and by Steyr in its new SM 12 bolt-action rifle, permits safe carry with the barrels loaded. The strikers are not cocked until you thumb the switch forward; there’s no chance the Duett can fire accidently with the switch to the rear. A button on its top ‘uncocks’ the strikers as you let the switch slide back… Bored for 3-inch, 12-gauge shells above and your choice of eight rifle cartridges below, the 23.6-inch, cold-hammer-forged barrels can be regulated with a screw at the muzzles.”
