According to firearms instructor Chad Thompson, the Mossberg 590A1 SPX tactical pump-action shotgun is a “‘shotgunner’s shotgun.’”
“From its appearance to its performance,” Thompson writes in the November issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, “it is immediately apparent to any human being of reasonable intelligence that this is an all-business shotgun meant for hard duty use.” Sporting a uniform Parkerized finish, a 20-inch barrel, a fiber-optic front sight and a ghost-ring rear, the few-frills SPX is simple—and simply reliable. “I will not go so far as to say that I conducted a torture test while I had it in my possession,” Thompson writes, “but I did do everything that I could (within reason) to cause it to fail.” The result: “it never once hiccupped.”
For Thompson’s full T&E of the 590A1 SPX, which “impress[ed] the heck out” of out both Thompson and the veteran SWAT operators to whom Thompson lent the gun, check out the November 2013 issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, available on newsstands and digitally August 27, 2013.
