Ken Hackathorn is easily one of the most experienced trainers in the firearms world. Hackathorn helped found the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), then several years later, after the IPSC’s focus had changed, he founded the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) along with Bill Wilson (owner of Wilson Combat), Dick Thomas, Walt Rauch, John Sayle and Larry Vickers.

Hackathorn, a certified deputy sheriff with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio, has served the U.S Army Special Forces as a small-arms instructor, trained FBI agents and taught high-speed tactical units worldwide. He also has an extensive background in law enforcement training. One of Gunsite’s first instructors, Hackathorn has been instructing for over 35 years. He currently works with Grey Group Training. His philosophy is simple, direct and easy to apply—it’s all about practical application.

Hackathorn is one of the most sought after firearms instructors around, so I couldn’t pass up attending one of his courses. The fact that it was taking place at Bill Wilson’s Circle WC Ranch made it a must. The Circle WC Ranch hosts extensive firearms tests and occasional training courses with select instructors, but it’s best known for offering some of the greatest hog hunting in the U.S.
