The best way to raise your rifle-shooting proficiency is to lean on the expertise of a qualified instructor. One of the best instructors I know is U.S. Army Master Sergeant James Gilliland. Best known for a record-breaking 1,367-yard countersniper kill with an M24 .308 while deployed in Iraq, he takes most pride in the success of his men, Shadow Team. Leading the 10-man Shadow Team, attached to the 2/69 3rd Infantry Division, Gilliland and his men learned their lessons well. Tasked with cleaning out insurgents from Ramadi, Iraq—a “target-rich” environment—Shadow Team killed at least 276 enemy combatants in 2005 and 2006.
