In addition to being a former sworn deputy sheriff, an international security consultant and a firearms trainer, Deon Martin is a top-tier competitor and is currently the coach for the University of Florida Practical Pistol Team. In short, he has lots of experience working with firearms, and this knowledge from carrying, teaching and shooting thousands of kinds of firearms certainly gives him an edge in competition. During his lifetime, Martin has shot in many action shooting venues, but now he shoots primarily in United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches with his Glock 41 Gen4 in .45 ACP—one of the newest Glock pistols to hit the market.
The Glock 41 Gen4 features a longer slide and a 5.31-inch barrel for better terminal ballistics, more weight up front to help tame muzzle rise, and a longer sight radius for greater targeting precision. As with all of Glock’s Gen4 pistols, it comes with interchangeable backstraps that allow each shooter to find the perfect fit for their hands as well as a dual recoil spring assembly that also helps to tame muzzle rise and reduce felt recoil.
This video shows Deon Martin burning through a course of fire at the 2014 Pro-Am Championship held in Frostproof, Fla., in July of 2014. Although it looks like he is shooting a 9mm G34, he’s actually tearing up the stage with his G41 Gen4 .45, which has a power factor of 167. You’ll notice the lack of .45-caliber muzzle flip. Martin chooses to run the Glock with one of the included backstraps that features an extended beavertail, which allows him to hold the gun very close to its centerline. Along with that perfect grip, the dual recoil spring assembly helps Martin get back on target for extremely fast follow-up shots.
