The DeSoto Police Department will host the 2011 Texas Police Games, which is like the Olympics for Texas police officers.
The games, sponsored by the Texas Police Athletic Federation, will be take place June 15-19.
Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez is asking the county commissioners for permission to use her gun range, the Kenneth Mitchum Firearms Training Center, to host the pistol match and rifle shooting events.
The range is located on 19 acres in southeast Dallas County near Hutchins.
The Sheriff’s Department said the only expense would be for some additional steel targets and shot timers, which are used for the department’s basic police science class and continuing education.
The games have been held for the past 35 years throughout Texas. Officers compete in more than 25 events. The police federation says it promotes physical fitness for police officers through athletic competition in the annual Texas Police Games.
