Korean War veteran buried in Appleton

More than 60 years after his death, an Appleton soldier has been buried with full military honors. Pfc. Arthur Hopfensperger died in the line of duty during the Korean War in 1950.

Hopfensperger’s family finally got to say good bye to their hero. “The family just feels relief finally that he’s back here where he should be,” said Hopfensperger’s cousin, who shares the same name.

“We thought that they were never really going to find him and finally they did, which was a surprise. It’s kind of tragic in a way, his mom and dad are gone, but the rest of the family’s at ease that he’s finally back,” said Arthur.

Hopfensberger enlisted in the military when he was 17. He died in battle at 18 in 1950. Since then, his family was left in the dark.
