Afghan and Pakistani forces clashed overnight in a historically disputed border region, leaving an Afghan police officer dead and others wounded, officials said Thursday.

The incident could add to growing tension between the long-uneasy neighbors, both of which are key U.S. allies.

For years, Afghanistan and Pakistan have accused each other of various border infringements, but fighting has been rare. The clashes that erupted Wednesday night, in the rugged Goshta area of eastern Afghanistan’s Nangahar province, follow rising complaints from Kabul about new border outposts it says Pakistan has established in the region.
