The U.S. Air Force will base 18 new F-35 fighter planes at Burlington International Airport in Vermont. The decision follows a heated debate over whether the planes would generate too much noise and pose a risk to the surrounding community.
The first F-35s, which will replace the aging F-16, are due to arrive in Vermont in 2020.
The Air Force also announced Tuesday that it would base 2 F-35s at the active-duty Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah.
